Dance… the Language of Life…
By: Connie Szymonik
Inspired by: the 2008 New England Fred Astaire Championship Competition
I am a new student at the Mystic studio. I attended my first championship competition as an enthusiastic spectator. On Saturday I watched the Latin dances and then attended the evening formal banquet and professional show.
The grand ballroom of the Marriot sizzled with excitement. The dance floor beckoned to the dancers and they answered the call by performing a wide range of Latin dances including the Cha Cha, Rumba, and Salsa. The spirit of each dance was contagious. The dancers’ energy pulsed through air and coursed through the veins of the audience who enthusiastically cheered for their favorite couples.
In the evening I felt like Cinderella at the ball. The dining tables where beautiful and the dance floor was softly lit by the glittering chandeliers setting the stage for a wonderful night of food, dancing, and celebration. Of course the part of the evening everyone waited for was the professional show. We saw the Fred Astaire teachers and students perform their championship dances. The highlight of the show was an exhilarating performance by none other then Tony Dovolani, of “Dancing with the Stars”, and his dance partner Elena Grinenko. They were a spectacular end to a magical night.
A poem:
The Language of Life Take my hand and dance with me.
Move your body with mine,
And give to me your heart.
Render yourself to me,
And grace with me your soul.
We’ll learn the rhythm of love.
Take my hand and share with me A dance…
The language of life.

Competition
Competitions are one of the greatest tools we can offer our students in achieving their dancing goals. Not only are they an exciting personal challenge, but they are also a whole lot of fun! Competitions provide a glimpse of the greater community of Fred Astaire, an opportunity to meet and observe students from other studios, and the opportunity to see just how far your own dancing can go. Our competitions occur both regionally and nationally in various places throughout the United States. Students of all levels can compete against other students of the same level, even as a beginner.
Our next competition will be held March 6-9th at the Quincy, Ma Marriott

Benefits of Dancing
The Fred Astaire Dance Studios of New England invite you to share in the magic of social dancing and rediscover the beauty and grace of this art form. As you begin your journey through our unique dance curriculums, you will quickly come to realize the many physical and social benefits that our dance world provides. Dancing provides a creative release, a fascinating program of self improvement and genuine fun.
FUN
Although your commitment to learn to dance will demand concentration, dedication and time, you will be constantly
surrounded by artistic, cheerful people who will make your instruction at Fred Astaire Dance Studios a most pleasurable
and rewarding experience.
FRIENDSHIPS
Beyond instruction, dance opens a wide spectrum of social settings in which friendships are forged and dreams come true. Scheduled Fred Astaire Dance Studio practice dance parties, local, regional and national competitions and fun nights out on the town provide dancers with a full social calendar.
CONFIDENCE
Dancers possess an aura of self-confidence and an ability to enjoy themselves more in public settings. Their entire mental outlook takes on a renewed sense of creativity, motivation and energy.
CREATIVITY
Dance provides an emotional outlet in which a person can truly reflect his or her feelings through body movement. The ability to dance is present in everyone, it only needs to be cultivated through sound instruction methods. Then you’re on your own, expressing yourself with passion and flair.
HEALTH
Dancing helps the body’s circulatory system as it makes your heart pump blood faster. Dancing encourages weight control and overall fitness through calorie burn off. The constant movement and muscle extension during dance sessions also provides a pleasing, mild exercise most people long for but rarely achieve, especially in such pleasant circumstances.
